Watercooler Chats with Leon from Works

Ever wondered what it really takes to become an expert? Malcolm Gladwell says it’s 10,000 hours, but we think it’s more about the small, overlooked moments that fill those hours.
In our latest series, Watercooler Chats, we peel back the curtain on office life with people who spend their days making the world a little more interesting. No fluff, just the real stories behind the titles.

Meet Leon, the founder of Works a dynamic co-working space in the heart of Christchurch. Since opening its doors, Works has become the go-to hub for creative professionals and businesses looking for a flexible, collaborative environment.
Leon, known as the unofficial office barista and for his endless banter, is a true advocate for community and innovation, he is often seen bouncing around the space, chatting with members, and ensuring everyone feels at home.
We asked Leon some questions across the watercooler so you can get to know him better.
Describe your job in one sentence, then explain why that description is misleading.
I talk to people all day, but I'm not the host of a talk show. Misleading because while it sounds like endless banter, it's actually about creating connections, solving challenges, and setting the stage for businesses to succeed.
What's the most bizarre task you've had to do in your role?
I have sat in on a couple of disciplinary meetings as support people and some of those were WILD.
If your job had a theme song, what would it be and why?
It Was A Good Day by Ice Cube, because when everything runs smoothly, the coffee machines are working, the Wi-Fi is fast, and everyone's happy, it really is a good day.
What does your family think your job is?
My 6 year old daughter thinks I am 300+ people's boss. It's hard to explain that these people are members and don't at all report to me.
What’s the most boring part of your job that you secretly enjoy?
Making coffee for people. It’s oddly therapeutic and a great way to connect with members.

What does your family think your job is?
My daughter swears I “sell sauce” and my husband insists I “just move boxes around.”
