Sara and Sam, from Grizzly Baked Goods. Known by locals, Grizzly is the go-to stop for carb goodness, and their newest location on Cashel Street is no exception. This pint-sized shop is packed with all your Grizzly faves—donuts, pastries, sandos, and fresh sourdough—plus a few exclusive treats (hello, buttermilk biscuits and sweet pies). With dreamy interiors designed by Semi Creative and top-notch coffee from Embassy, Sam and Sara knew their stuff when opening their third brick-and-mortar location in Ōtautahi.
We asked Sara and Sam a few boring questions so you can get to know them, and their neat place, a little better.

Tell us a little bit about your role at Grizzly?
Sara - I'm managing the Cashel St shop, as well as doing all the usual behind the scenes things business owners need to do, and raising our 4 kids. Sam - I'm the Managing Director and I do a lot of planning and strategy to make sure our fantastic team is taken care of.
What's something in Christchurch you think everyone should experience at least once?
Sara - Take the gondola up the hill and walk down to Lyttleton, finishing with some chips at Civil & Naval. Sam - A Canterbury Rams home game at Cowles Stadium.
What's your latest discovery?
Sara - For our staff Christmas party we went to a lawn bowls club and it was a super fun day in the sun! Sam - I just upgraded my pizza oven and have discovered a whole new world of things I can burn!
Okay, quickfire round. What podcast are you listening to at the moment?
Sara - Anything true crime, but I really liked Dear Jane from The Spinoff. Sam - Doughboys (it's terrible, don't listen to it).
What's your favourite Christchurch meal?
Sara - Depending on the day, either a vegan pie from Japanz Bakery or an evening out at 5th Street. Sam - Other than an Eggy Breakfast from Grizzly (lol) I'd say taking the family to Drexelsra.
Where's the best seat in the house in the Grizzly Chashel Street and why?
Sara - On a warm day when we've got all the doors open, I like to sit on the banquette closest to the door. One of the main reasons we picked this location was the north-facing sunshine! Sam - Taking it easy on the banquette with a piccolo in hand, watching the central city rush by.

What does your family think your job is?
My daughter swears I “sell sauce” and my husband insists I “just move boxes around.”
