During a recent trip to The 'Naki we stopped in for a toasted sammy and a Proof & Stock brew at former church-turned-neighbourhood-café, Dawn.

Dawn is run by friends Rosie and Seth and has been a welcome addition to the Ōakura area since its arrival earlier this year.

We asked Rosie and Seth a few boring questions so you can get to know them better.

What's your desert island dish?

Rosie: I had a beautiful creamy Pāua pasta when I was tramping the northern circuit on Rakiura, it's not a desert island but it came to mind first, after a long days walk, plus Pāua from the rocks in front of the hut, it was a meal I've thought about often since. Seth: Ceviche, I like all the ingredients cut extra small to get a taste of everything in each mouthful. Yum!

You have to wear one outfit for the rest of your life. Describe it.

Rosie: I'm sure it would be some type of leather boot, mechanics type overalls and a bandana, plus big colourful earrings, practical, but quite fun. Seth: Sarong-like-cloth of some sort. I'm a big fan of its versatility.

What's something new you’ve discovered recently?

Rosie: Pukeiti - it's a beautiful rhododendron garden surrounded by native bush, it's between two mountain ranges in Taranaki. I have found myself going for walks there on Mondays, it's quiet and has a lot of tracks, plus I've heard it's even more beautiful in spring. Seth: Grating boiled eggs on soups. I can thank Rosie for that.

Sum up Dawn in three words.

Rosie: warm, seasonal, local. Seth: fresh, cosy, kind.
